How:
Looting is your friend. Open all those boxes and safes, and empty all those shelves and sacks. You might not particularly need everything you pick up, but merchants will buy everything off you. Once you had looted an area, quickly map to a merchant to offload it all for a nice amount of caps. Keep doing this and you will soon build up a nice amount of caps to buy good armour and weapons, not just for yourself but also for your companions.
